Lockdown Stories - The Monkey Puzzle

As part of the social distancing / stay at home became very prevalent and fully enforced by April first week, it became hard to get stuff through Online delivery. I had stopped going to stores since Mid march and relied on home delivery, as we entered April I realized I had been lucky in the initial few weeks as most people either bought in bulk or had not fully embraced online grocery ordering. Luckily Walmart started upping its delivery game at that time so decided to try them.

We usually don't buy fresh produce from Walmart and I had not used their grocery app before. So started using their app to build a cart and was adding veggies and fruits and added Banana. While other apps I have used so far generally require you to add the number of bananas you want to buy these guys actually had it as number of banana bunches you want to buy. I clean missed the 'bunch' part and added 3 to the cart.  All good so far, I had finished the cart and then did a review with wife to check if we are missing anything. She was not happy seeing just 3 bananas added, add a few more she said and I did. I like to think she saw the phone when this happened but she is sure she didn't and perhaps that sealed it. I added 6 bunches of banana in the order and submitted it and the order was to be delivered same day evening.

The order got delivered and I picked up stuff from outside the door and moved some stuff to a 'safe corner' and then started with veggies and fruits which we wash, clean, dry and store in fridge or keep in right place. Somehow ended up picking all other fruits and veggies except bananas and then suddenly saw that there were like couple of bags of bananas. Quick scan of the reciept revealed it was like 12 lbs ( 6 kgs) almost. For a few mins we had no idea what to do with this and I thought what the guy delivering this order would have thought as there was like 6 bags of bananas. Must have thought some monkey lives in this house.

Our little monkey does like bananas, but between her and us still the consumption was going to be limited and offering it to anyone else in the neighborhood was out of question because of covid situation. So first we tried hanging it from the pots and pans holder which in turn hung from ceiling in the middle of kitchen and was more of a decorative thing than anything practical. So we hung up a few bunches like good old 'palacharakku/maligai kadai', the humble all in one small grocery stores in India. The theory we had was that by hanging it like it was in the tree/plant we could maybe convince the bananas to not ripen very quickly.

The house was quite a sight with all those bananas in kitchen and the smell after a while, despite the interesting attempt banana ripened soon. Since we were at home in a lockdown with lot of flour and time at hand the bananas got transformed into banana bread and cake of sorts.  Staying at home the cake and banana bread was good to much thorough as we processed all the news and sort of eased some of the worries!
